How The Duke Farms Dashboard Calculates Progress
This dashboard reports Duke Farms results only. It turns energy records from Duke Farms, a center of the Doris Duke Foundation, into clean electricity, operational energy-use emissions, and selected Scope 3 employee-commuting indicators compared with baseline year 2023.
Goal 1: 100% Clean Electricity
This goal has two related views. The official goal result is the annual clean electricity matching share from the generated Statement Periods summary. The hourly graphics underneath it use BESS_Ops_Bot 1-minute matching data to show operational hourly matching behavior.
Annual clean electricity matching
on-site solar MWh divided by included campus electricity MWh
- The Goal 1 graphic is driven by the generated Statement Periods summary rather than the BESS operations workbook.
- Solar electricity produced includes the original and newer on-site solar arrays.
- Electricity used includes the Farm Barn circuit load, other included Duke Farms electric building meters, and public EV charging stations.
- The annual matching share is on-site solar MWh divided by included campus electricity MWh.
- This is a physical energy-flow matching view; it does not count on-site solar as carbon-free electricity for Goal 2 carbon accounting.
- REC/SREC ownership is tracked separately for carbon-accounting claims.
- The annual trend graphic shows monthly solar MWh, electricity-use MWh, and the monthly annual matching share.
- Prior-year share, solar-produced, and electricity-used cards use the same annual matching calculation as the trend.
Hourly clean electricity matching
clean matched MWh divided by load MWh for each hour
- Hourly graphics use BESS_Ops_Bot 1-minute matching data, separate from the Statement Periods summary used for the annual chart.
- The dashboard currently includes March 1, 2025 8 AM through December 31, 2025 11 PM for 2025 and January 1, 2026 8 AM through June 1, 2026 7 AM for 2026.
- The 1-minute records provide BESS power, site load, new PV, old PV, and EV load readings.
- Interval load is calculated as the absolute site load plus the absolute EV load.
- Real-time solar served is the smaller of interval load and interval solar generation; exported solar is not included in the current hourly matching profile.
- Solar served through the battery is positive BESS discharge, following the BESS monthly KPI methodology.
- Clean matched MWh is capped at the interval load so hourly matching does not count clean supply beyond the load served in that hour.
- A fully matched hour is counted when clean matched MWh covers at least 99% of the hour's load.
- Reporting months use the BESS 8 AM reporting anchor. The hourly view is an operational interval view and does not replace the annual Goal 1 result.
Goal 2: 80% Lower Emissions from energy use (Scope 1 and Scope 2)
This goal adds up Scope 1 and Scope 2 energy-use emissions from included electricity use valued with the grid emissions factor, heating fuels, and direct vehicle fuels. Category 7 Scope 3 employee commuting is shown alongside the goal boundary so the current dashboard remains transparent while broader Scope 3 inventory work continues.
reduction = baseline-year emissions minus selected-year emissions, divided by baseline-year emissions
- Scope 1 includes direct campus fuels: natural gas, heating oil, propane, gasoline, and diesel.
- Scope 2 applies the grid electricity emissions factor to included campus electricity use. On-site clean electricity matching is tracked separately and does not reduce this accounting view.
- Category 7 Scope 3 includes employee commuting gasoline estimates and employee charging estimates in the current operational boundary.
- Duke Farms uses 2023 as the official NSEP implementation base year for tracking future decarbonization progress.
- Historical emissions reductions are also reported relative to a 2006 reference year to align with New Jersey climate policy. Gross emissions reductions and verified carbon removals are reported separately.
- The Goal 2 graphic combines baseline comparison, reduction progress, annual emissions history, selected-year emissions total, and the source-flow view.
The reduction progress donut is shown for complete annual years and indicates how much of the 80% reduction goal has been reached. Year-to-date years are labeled separately and are not presented as final annual goal progress.
Data Sources
- Generated monthly Statement Periods summary, refreshed from Airtable and used as the primary dashboard source.
- Utility electricity records, including campus meters, the Farm Barn circuit load meter, other building meters, and public charging stations.
- On-site solar production records from the original and newer solar arrays.
- BESS_Ops_Bot 1-minute hourly matching data for the operational hourly Goal 1 graphics.
- Fuel records for natural gas, propane, heating oil, gasoline, and diesel.
- Employee commuting estimates for Category 7 Scope 3 fuel and charging included in the current operational boundary.
Data Rules
- Only Duke Farms center records are included. NYO/DD Center and Shangri La records are reserved for a future OneOrg dashboard.
- Records are grouped by the year of the statement end date. If that date is missing, the start date is used.
- Rows marked to be ignored are left out so they do not double count energy or emissions.
- Completed years show final annual results. The current year is labeled year-to-date until all annual records are loaded.
- For years before 2025, main campus electric load is reconstructed from the best available utility meter and solar production records because the direct Farm Barn circuit load meter was not yet available.
- Some delivered fuels are spread across months using a seasonal pattern so winter fuel use is represented in winter months.
- Broader Scope 3 inventory work beyond included employee commuting is underway and targeted for completion by the end of 2026.
Emissions Factors
Activity data is converted to pounds CO2e using the factors below, then divided by 2,204.62 to show metric tons CO2e. Electricity is reported in MWh where energy production or use is shown directly.
Electricity use (Scope 2 grid emissions factor)
0.716 pounds CO2e per kWh
Natural gas (Scope 1)
12.1 pounds CO2e per billing unit
Propane (Scope 1)
12.68 pounds CO2e per gallon
Heating oil and diesel (Scope 1)
22.45 pounds CO2e per gallon
Gasoline (Scope 1 and Category 7 commuting)
17.86 pounds CO2e per gallon
